Penguins owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle are considering selling at least a portion of the team.
They have retained Morgan Stanley to explore their options, which include selling all, some or none of their interest in the franchise, according to multiple sources.
TSN, a Canadian TV network, first reported the news.
“It’s not like there’s a ‘For Sale’ sign out, but that’s a definite possibility,” a source who is familiar with the situation but requested anonymity said.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, speaking at a press conference in Tampa this evening before Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final, declined to discuss the move by Lemieux and Burkle, telling reporters that if there is an announcement to be made, it will come from the Penguins.
