Rutherford gets his man, signs bottom-six winger Tanev

The Penguins entered the free-agent signing period at midday with a modest budget and a well-defined shopping list.

The objective, Jim Rutherford said Saturday, was to add "a guy we can put in there that we feel makes it harder for us to play against."

He didn't identify right winger Brandon Tanev by name -- that would have been tampering -- but it seemed clear that Tanev would be a good fit for the role the Penguins envisioned.
