Acquiring Derick Brassard will not reduce the Penguins’ ability to retain Patric Hornqvist past this season, general manager Jim Rutherford told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Sunday afternoon.
“One has nothing to do with the other,” Rutherford said. “If you look at what we did, we did not take on any more money or cap space. Actually, we gained cap space.”
Since Vegas is paying 40 percent of Brassard’s $5 million cap hit, that means the Penguins are on the hook for the remaining $3 million. Ian Cole ($2.1 million) and Ryan Reaves ($1.125) make a combined $3.
