Rumblings: Penguins looking to bolster blue line

Jim Rutherford has made his first bold move of the season, by firing head coach Mike Johnston.

But the Pittsburgh Penguins veteran general manager likely is not done.

Sometime between now and the Feb. 29 trade deadline, there’s a good chance he’s also going to try to bolster the blue line.

"Yes. One of the positives of late is that our defense has been more activated, it’s jumped in the play more," Rutherford said over the phone Sunday. "Part of that is the maturity of Brian Dumoulin, Olli Maatta getting back, and the addition of [David] Warsofsky, it’s given us more balance and more options on the back end as far as moving the puck and jumping into the play.
