I spent hours Monday night trying to pick the one moment that best defined the Penguins’ sour 5-2 loss to the Washington Capitals. Was it Sidney Crosby dropping Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov with one unpenalized punch in the first period? Or the home crowd’s mock cheers on those rare occasions when the Penguins cleared the puck from their end zone or managed a shot on the Washington net? Or the boos that poured down from the PPG Paints Arena seats when the Penguins wasted three power-play opportunities by passing the puck harmlessly around the perimeter when they weren’t chasing it down after a Capitals’ clear?
