The Penguins placed defenseman Zach Trotman on waivers on Friday at noon, presumably with the intention of assigning him to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Trotman has yet to play this season after undergoing sports hernia surgery during training camp.
On Monday, the Penguins assigned Trotman to Wilkes-Barre on a conditioning assignment, which would have allowed him to be on the AHL roster for 14 days. However, Trotman didn't play in Wilkes-Barre's only game since then, which was in Binghamton on Wednesday.
With Pittsburgh carrying nine defenseman (eight of which are healthy at the moment), Trotman isn't currently needed on the NHL roster.
