Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford was named general manager of the year at the NHL Awards Wednesday night in Las Vegas, the league’s newest expansion site.
Rutherford, 67, is the first general manager in the expansion era to lead two separate franchises to a Stanley Cup after also leading Carolina to a championship in 2006.
“I’m honored to win this award,” Rutherford said. “To me it’s a team award.”
Rutherford was the lone representative of the Stanley Cup champions to claim more hardware as Pascal Dupuis was edged out for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy by Jaromir Jagr of the Florida Panthers, and Sidney Crosby finished as runner-up to Patrick Kane for the Hart Trophy as league MVP.
