Sports figures say all the time that they are their own worst critics. No one in this town does harsher public self-assessments than Jim Rutherford. Remember after the 2014-15 season when he said he regretted trading Simon Despres for Ben Lovejoy? Lovejoy certainly does. He used it as motivation to become a key contributor on the Penguins’ Stanley Cup team last season.
Rutherford was back at it this week.
In a stunning, candid interview with the Post-Gazette’s Hall of Fame hockey writer Dave Molinari, Rutherford conceded the Penguins aren’t getting what he had hoped from their two goaltenders, Cup winners Matt Murray and Marc-Andre Fleury.
