Penguins get goals from roster hopefuls, but lose preseason opener to Sabres

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penguins opened up their preseason schedule with a 4-3 overtime loss to Buffalo Tuesday night at Penn State’s Pegula Ice Arena.

Jack Eichel scored the winner for the Sabres at 0:25 of overtime.

Matt Tennyson scored the tying goal for the Sabres at 17:15 of the third to set up Eichel’s winner.

Olli Maatta scored at 8:12 of the third period, on the power play, off a feed from center Teddy Blueger. Maatta will certainly be on the roster opening night, but the Penguins got their first two goals from players fighting for spots.
