Late in the second period Saturday night, the Penguins’ fourth line was coming off the ice for a change after a long shift.
Matt Cullen and Scott Wilson hopped back onto the bench, but Carter Rowney decided to stay out for a couple of extra seconds to lay a hit on Ottawa defenseman Marc Methot, attempting to clear the puck. After Rowney’s hit, the Penguins ended up keeping the puck in the Ottawa zone and creating a flurry of scoring chances
Despite the Penguins’ 2-1 overtime loss to the Senators in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final, the fourth line of Wilson, Cullen and Rowney has now put together back-to-back effective games.
