Mario Named to “Order of Hockey in Canada”

Penguins co-owner Mario Lemieux was inducted into the prestigious Order of Hockey in Canada at a special ceremony Monday night in Halifax, NS. The event came barely a week after the Penguins won the Stanley Cup, the fourth of Lemieux’s career.

Lemieux was inducted along with Bob Nicholson, the long-time president and CEO of Hockey Canada; David Branch, the long-time president of the Canadian Hockey League; and Geraldine Heaney, a two-time Olympic medalist and seven-time world champion with the Canadian women’s Olympic team.

Lemieux’s international highlights include serving as captain of the 2002 Canadian Olympic team that won the gold medal and scoring the winning goal for Team Canada against the Soviet Union in the 1987 Canada Cup.
