Former player Kevin Stevens will join the Penguins a more permanent capacity, as the team announced Friday that it has hired Stevens as a special assignment scout.

Stevens, who was a surprise, guest instructor for July's development camp at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, will be based out of Boston, near his hometown. His role will include amateur scouting and the scouting of college free agents.

Stevens, 52, is from Brockton, Mass. He ranks in the top 10 in franchise history in goals (260), assists (295) and points (555), totaling 522 games over two stints.

This is actually Stevens' second go-around in the front office as well; he was a pro scout from 2005-12.
