Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford has narrowed down his targets to fill the team’s void at third-line center, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a deal is imminent.

Rutherford is focused on three players, he said Friday morning after the team’s first training camp workout at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry.

“I think one or two of those guys will become available here, maybe even before the season starts, but maybe not,” Rutherford said. “If not, I’m maybe not as anxious as you guys are to fill that role.”

One of those players appears to be Detroit center Riley Sheahan, while the other two remain unclear.
