The Penguins were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs with a 2-1 loss against Washington in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals Monday at PPG Paints Arena. Here are some initial thoughts on the defeat.
It was over when: Washington’s Evgeny Kuznetsov slipped past defenseman Kris Letang — again — and beat goalie Matt Murray at 5:27 of overtime to send the Capitals to the conference final for the first time since the Clinton Administration.
Heroes: Murray gave up a horrible goal on the short side to Washington’s Alex Chiasson in the second period, but he otherwise played one of his best games of the playoffs, going save for save with the Capitals’ Braden Holtby to get the game to overtime.
