Western Pennsylvania’s hockey players now have another tool to help them stay safe on the ice.
This week, the Iceoplex ice arena at Southpointe is installing a new safety feature called a Look-Up Line, meant to act like a warning track does in baseball. The Look-Up Line is a 40-inch wide orange line that runs around the entire circumference of the rink.
The goal is to reduce the risk of dangerous head and spinal cord injuries by warning players when they are approaching the boards.
The Look-Up Line is the patented creation of Thomas Smith, a former avid hockey player who was involved in two separate accidental board-related collisions that left him with severe spinal injuries.
