The last time Ryan Malone walked the course at St. Clair Country Club, it was to try out for the Upper St. Clair High School golf team. He didn’t make it. And the result was something to which Dustin Johnson, the U.S. Open champion earlier this summer at Oakmont Country Club, could relate.
“I missed (making the team) by a shot,” Malone recalled Monday at the Penguins annual alumni charity golf outing. “I bumped the ball on the tee, and they counted it as a stroke.”
It’s been almost 20 years since that day, and what has happened between then and now has been anything but predictable.
