Penguins center Evgeni Malkin was named the NHL's "First Star" for the month of January, the league announced Thursday.
Malkin led the NHL with 12 goals in the month, and added seven assists over 12 games. He led the Penguins to a 9-3-0 record in January, moving them from the fringes of the playoff picture into second place in the Metropolitan Division.
Malkin had three game-winning goals in the month, which he capped off with a hat trick Tuesday night against the Sharks.
Malkin now has 26 goals on the season, tied for fifth-most in the NHL.
