A few decades ago, dynasties were as much a part of the NHL as skates, pucks and ill-fated attempts to make the league take root in Atlanta.
Edmonton won five Stanley Cups between 1984 and 1990. That followed a four-season run of titles by the New York Islanders, whose streak came immediately after Montreal strung together four consecutive Cups.
In recent years, however, that trend has gone the way of bench-clearing brawls and Cooperall hockey pants.
Those Islanders are the most recent team to win more than two championships in a row, and the Penguins are the first team since Detroit in 1997 and 1998 to earn consecutive Cups.
