Metal detectors should be installed at the Consol Energy Center before the Pittsburgh Penguins’ first pre-season home game on Sept. 22, said officials at the Pittsburgh-Allegheny County authority that owns the city’s three big sports venues.
The Sports & Exhibition Authority board on Thursday agreed to reimburse the Penguins $107,856 for the team’s purchase of 36 walk-through metal detectors that will replace the wands previously used at the entrance.
Taylor Blice, facilities director for the authority, said the National Hockey League sent a letter to the team in February requiring the devices in advance of the 2015-16 season to comply with league safety standards.
