Conor Sheary’s breakout season hit a significant snag Monday, as he was a healthy scratch for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference final against the Senators at PPG Paints Arena.
Sheary, who scored 23 goals during the regular season, had been mired in a slump essentially since start of the playoffs and ceded his spot as third line left wing to Carl Hagelin, who started the game on a line with center Nick Bonino and right wing Patric Hornqvist.
In 12 playoff games before Monday, Sheary produced just three assists and was a minus-5, losing his spot on right wing on the Penguins top line with Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel.
