How the NHL handles concussions — or in this case doesn’t — prevented a spotter from pulling Penguins captain Sidney Crosby from Monday’s 5-2 loss to the Capitals in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at PPG Paints Arena.
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told Kevin Allen of USA TODAY Sports that Crosby’s head slamming into the boards following a mixup with goaltender Braden Holtby and defenseman John Carlson at 17:47 of the first period did not fit the criteria for removal.
“Depending on the mechanism of injury, ‘slow to get up’ does not trigger mandatory removal,” Daley told Allen.
