The Penguins may soon learn the Washington Capitals’ pain of being down a defenseman thanks to a league suspension.
Kris Letang took an interference penalty for a hit that appeared to be late and high on Capitals winger Marcus Johansson toward the end of the first period of the Penguins’ 3-2 Game 3 win Monday night, and could be getting a call from the NHL about further discipline before the teams reconvene Wednesday night for Game 4.
Capitals coach Barry Trotz wouldn’t go so far as to call for a suspension, but said the league set “a little bit of a standard” with the three games given to Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik for a late hit on Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta in Game 2.
