Andy Bathgate, Former Penguin, Dies at 83

Andy Bathgate, a Hockey Hall of Famer who scored the first goal in Pittsburgh Penguins history, passed away on Friday. He was 83.

Bathgate played more than 1,000 games in an 18-year NHL career for the New York Rangers, Toronto, Detroit, the Penguins and Vancouver. He scored 349 goals and 743 points, won a Stanley Cup with Toronto and was a two-time First-Team NHL All-Star with the Rangers.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Andy Bathgate, one of the great players in NHL history and an original Penguin who scored the first goal in team history,” the Penguins said in a statement.
