The Pittsburgh Penguins have the luxury of being potential buyers in advance of Monday's NHL trade deadline, and players on the playoff-bound squad seem to be very comfortable about their chances of remaining with the team through the 3pm EST cutoff.
“When I was in Calgary, they were going through that transition where they were trading [defenseman Jay] Bouwmeester and [Jarome] Iginla,” winger Blake Comeau said, via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “When you trade guys of that stature — especially Iginla, who had been the face of that organization for so long — it’s a bit of a whirlwind.”
That sort of stress isn't present in the Penguins locker room, as there really hasn't been much mention of the deadline at all in the players' off-ice conversations.
“I don’t think there’s been really any talk of that,” forward Nick Spaling said.
After acquiring forward Daniel Winnik on Wednesday, GM Jim Rutherford has said he won't rule out another move. However, a major roster-shaking trade doesn't seem likely at all for a team already in great position to make a postseason run.
