Hosting the NCAA Tournament in Pittsburgh this year, the Pitt wrestling program had hoped for a good showing on the national stage. It was a great opportunity to show off the city and also the program, which is certainly improving. But in the end, it was a relatively disappointing finish for a program that had climbed into the Top 15 in the rankings this year.
Five of Pitt’s wrestlers made the NCAA Tournament but none earned the coveted All-American status (a top eight finish in your weight class). To walk away empty-handed in that regard was disappointing.
Freshmen Micky Phillippi and Nino Bonaccorsi got off to good starts, each winning their first two matches.
