The Pitt baseball team started the year splitting its opening four-game tilt with Canisius College in Port Charlotte, Florida. The Golden Griffins took the opening and closing game of the series, while Pitt swept the Saturday doubleheader.
Diving into the two losses this weekend, the bullpen proved to be Pitt’s Achilles heel as both losses were each by eight runs. In the season opener, Panther ace Matt Gilbertson was unable to close the door with two outs in back-to-back innings and exited after four innings allowing four runs. The real damage took place just after as Canisius plated seven runs over the next five innings.
