Due to a variety of factors, bowl games aren't always the best way to compare conferences. Many teams involved are transitioning members of its respective coaching staffs. The long layoff between the end of the regular season and the bowls can impact the preparation process in unexpected ways. And there is often variability in the motivations of the teams involved in bowls, from those contending for a national championship to those simply happy to be there and enjoying the festivities.
