Following a terrible, horrible, 2016-17 campaign, and adding no new faces outside of the draft in the summer of ’17, why would talented free agents want to come to Phoenix anyway? At the moment, the Suns are not a destination team, so McDonough was not fooling himself or the fans by grandstanding that he was going to make a significant push.
There too is another hitch: there really isn’t anyone worth, say, throwing the max at, this summer either, so difference makers will be very difficult to come by. Sure, LeBron James and Kevin Durant would be more than worth signing as unrestricted free agents, but do not fool yourself: neither of them are coming to Phoenix, (personally I do not believe that either are leaving their respective teams).
