A year ago the Union received a major scare in their opening U.S. Open Cup game against the Harrisburg City Islanders, needing a goal in the 93rd minute to secure a 3-2 win.
The teams met again Wednesday in a fourth-round game, and although the Union had some anxious first-half moments, they assumed control for most of the final 45 minutes in a 3-1 win over the Islanders at Talen Energy Stadium.
A goal by rookie Marcus Epps in the 48th minute, on a feed from Haris Medunjanin, extended the Union's lead to 3-1. Epps slipped a ball by a defender and keeper Sean Lewis from just beyond the six-yard line.
