McCarthy hoping to continue strong form in US Open Cup

The Union’s John McCarthy once again will find himself in a familiar place, in net for a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match. Head Coach Jim Curtin announced Wednesday that McCarthy will get the nod to start in goal as the team begins Open Cup play against Harrisburg tonight (7:30 p.m.).

“Johnny will be starting for us in goal," Curtin said. "We all know his history in this competition. He’s made some big saves for us, in both the round of play and penalty kicks."

Since being acquired by Philadelphia in 2015, McCarthy has appeared in six of the Union’s eight Open Cup matches (five in 2015 and one in 2016).
