A few days after stealing their most surprising win of the year, the Union delivered what might be their most impressive.
With nine starters rested ahead of Wednesday's U.S. Open Cup final, the squad of backups took down Western Conference-leading Sporting Kansas City, 2-0, at Talen Energy Stadium. Jay Simpson scored both goals in his first start of the season, and just his fourth appearance.
The only regular starters on the field at the opening whistle were Auston Trusty and Borek Dockal. Fabinho, Fabian Herbers, Derrick Jones and goalkeeper John McCarthy also got rare starts, and 21-year-old Cameroonian right back Olivier Mbaizo made his Union debut.
