Vince Velasquez’s poor July concludes as Phillies fall to Pirates

Final score: Pirates 7, Phillies 0

There was no 7-0 comeback in-store today.

A night after Brad Miller hit a walk-off grand slam in Game 2 of a doubleheader, Friday’s Philadelphia Phillies-Pittsburgh Pirates game felt like it was over from the very beginning. The Phillies lacked energy all night long, and increasingly seem desperate for reinforcements to the starting rotation.

New acquisition Kyle Gibson will replace either Vince Velasquez — who struggled Friday evening, concluding a brutal month — or Matt Moore in the rotation. Still, with Zach Eflin two-three weeks away from returning according to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, one of Velasquez, Moore or Chase Anderson may need to make another start or two.
