Every major league pitcher can’t be high leverage. While teams aren’t going to succeed if they don’t have pitchers who can get key outs in the late innings, they also need a pitcher or two who can take an inning or two in a non-competitive game, just so the high leverage guys don’t have to.
That’s where Tyler Gilbert comes in.
Gilbert is a one-time 6th round draft pick of the Phillies who threw a no-hitter in his first career major league start back in 2021. That was not a harbinger for his career, as he spent the next three years as a “Quad A” pitcher for the Diamondbacks.
