“I am not a number! I am a free man!” So said Number Six, the titular character in the iconic 1967 British thriller The Prisoner. But if you’re a pitcher, you are, at least in part, a number: the number of innings you pitch. And if MLB has its way, pitchers won’t be entirely free: speaking of six, that’s the minimum number of innings a starter would have to throw before being eligible to hit the showers, per a proposal reportedly under consideration.
There are, of course, no guarantees that this rule will come to pass.
