Ryan Howard and the spring of uncomfortable realities

Watching your favorite players get old is tough. We like to remember our favorite players in their best possible light.

Depending on your age, if you close your eyes and someone says the name of “Chase Utley” or “Steve Carlton” or another player that warmed your heart, the image that enters your mind’s eye is that player in their most youthful, most impactful state. If it’s Utley you remember, you see his short, sweet swing depositing a baseball into the right field stands. If it’s Carlton that jogs your memory, its the high, somewhat awkward camera angle from the early days of Veterans Stadium showing a slider that makes hitters chase shadows and ghosts.
