Ruben Amaro, Jr. will not return to Phillies in 2016

Team president Andy MacPhail announced the news Thursday afternoon.

Ruben Amaro, Jr. will not be the Phillies' general manager when the 2016 season rolls around.

According to new team president Andy MacPhail, the Phillies have elected not to extend Amaro's contract, effective immediately. Assistant GM Scott Proefrock will take over effective immediately.

Amaro had been the Phillies' general manager since November of 2008, taking over the team after the World Series victory and subsequent parade down Broad Street.

Despite acquiring names like Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt and Hunter Pence, the Phillies never returned to Broad Street for a follow-up act.
