PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — According to a report from Ken Rosenthal, Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has cleared waivers and is eligible to be traded prior to the August 31 waiver trade deadline.
Utley possesses the right to veto any trade that the Phillies may agree to.
The Phillies have made it clear all year that they are in a rebuild mode and looking to free up opportunities for younger players to play. Utley’s recent DL stint allowed for more opportunities for Cesar Hernandez at second base.
There is no guarantee that Utley will receive substantial playing time with the Phillies throughout the remainder of the season.
