PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies used and lost their first instant replay challenge of the season on a bizarre series of events in the sixth inning Monday against the Padres at Citizens Bank Park.
The Phils had the bases loaded with no outs when pinch-hitter Darin Ruf lofted a fly ball to left field. Padres shortstop Alexei Ramirez backpedaled as left fielder Wil Myers remained motionless because he could not locate the ball. The ball dropped behind Ramirez, but the infield fly rule had been called.
Runners can advance at their own risk when an infield fly has been called and Cesar Hernandez easily scored from third to tie the game at 3.
