PHOENIX - Whenever the Phillies needed a clutch swing in Wednesday's wild 9-8 win over Arizona, Cody Asche stood at the plate. He rapped a two-out double to right in the fifth to cut a two-run deficit in half. He slashed a two-out single to right in the seventh to tie the game. With the bases loaded in the eighth inning of a tie game, Asche smashed a sacrifice fly to deep center.
And, in the 10th inning, Asche singled to advance the eventual winning run from first to third. After 3 hours and 53 minutes of baseball that was, at times, difficult to comprehend, the Phillies could boast a winning road trip.
