WASHINGTON — Rhys Hoskins lost on a buzzer beater.
Hoskins went deep 20 times in the semifinals of the annual Home Run Derby on Monday night, leaving the Phillies left fielder in strong position to advance to the championship round. But with a furious final 30 seconds, including a home run on his last swing, Chicago Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber eliminated Hoskins, 21-20, at Nationals Park.
Schwarber advanced to the finals against Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper, the hometown favorite who tied a District of Columbia flag bandanna around his head and knocked off Atlanta’s Freddie Freeman and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Max Muncy.
