CINCINNATI -- The Phillies hoped Ernesto Frieri could help their bullpen this season, but that will not happen.
The team announced Tuesday morning it had released Frieri, 30, from his Minor League contract. Frieri had been reassigned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after struggling in seven Grapefruit League appearances. He posted an 11.57 ERA in seven innings, allowing 10 hits, 10 runs (nine earned runs), four walks and five home runs with eight strikeouts.
