PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies trusted Hector Neris enough Saturday that he pitched the ninth inning and earned a save in a 4-1 victory over the Brewers at Miller Park. He needed just eight pitches to retire the side.
Phillies manager Gabe Kapler beamed afterward.
But after Neris allowed four runs in the ninth inning Sunday in a 10-9 victory over the Brewers, the Phillies no longer trusted that Neris could record outs on a consistent basis. They optioned him Monday to Triple-A. They selected the contract of Triple-A left-hander Austin Davis to take his place on the 25-man roster.
