Despite his ERA rising from 9.00 to 9.11 in his last start, David Buchanan will remain in the Phillies' rotation and make his next scheduled start Tuesday against the Washington Nationals, interim manager Pete Mackanin said on Saturday.
No major-league pitcher - starter or reliever - to have logged at least 50 innings has a worse ERA than Buchanan, who has averaged fewer than five innings over 11 starts this season. His 2.08 walks plus hits per inning pitched is also a major-league worst.
But given the rebuilding Phillies' status as baseball's worst team, the front office would rather give another opportunity to the 26-year-old righthander than move back to a five-man rotation.
