ST. LOUIS - David Buchanan faced 21 batters Thursday in a 9-3 Phillies loss to the Cardinals and 11 of them reached base. The second-year righthander left Busch Stadium with the worst rate of combined walks and hits per innings pitched (1.91) among 131 qualified major-league starters.
"I want my team to win a game that I pitch in," he said. "I'm not looking at my record. I want my team to win when I pitch in a ball game. I don't care how it happens. [I'm] 0 for 5 right now. But I want my team to be confident when I take that mound.
