Monday, just over five hours after general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said they had not made any decisions on whether Cody Asche would go to Triple-A for a tuneup in left field when the time came for prospect Maikel Franco's call-up, the Phillies sent him there.
Instead of pulling Asche aside one morning and having a meeting to tell him, the Phillies gave the 24-year-old the news minutes after the final out of a 4-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
"Cody was talked to," is how manager Ryne Sandberg put it.
It's possible that was just Sandberg's way of saying they had sat down and explained how much a part of this team the organization sees him as and that it's best for everybody involved — that's what the manager told the media at least — because that's what should have happened.
