Phillies mark opening of ballfield for city youths

SOMEWHERE, Stan is smiling.

The Phillies yesterday presented the latest stage of their Urban Youth Academy project, a glistening baseball diamond in FDR Park, just across Broad Street from the big-league Bank.

In August, they will break ground for the next stage: a 7,500-square-foot indoor practice and academic facility next to the Marian Anderson Recreation Center.

Marian Anderson Rec is where Mo'ne Davis and most of the other Taney Dragons nurtured their skills (as Anderson Monarchs) in their run to the Little League World Series last summer. The Phillies expect the indoor facility, with its four batting cages and two real pitching mounds, to be finished in November.
