Phillies lose to Cardinals in bottom of ninth

ST. LOUIS - Jeanmar Gomez dropped his head and slouched his shoulder as he watched the ground ball leave the infield. The Phillies closer had been perfect in nine saves chances. And Wednesday night would not be the pitcher's 10th.

He allowed two runs in the bottom of the ninth as the Phillies fell, 5-4, to the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Matt Holliday hit a game-winning single with two outs. Gomez had almost blown the game three batters earlier when Matt Adams crushed a ball that hit the top of the center-field wall.

The hit was a few inches from being a walk-off homer.
