PHILADELPHIA — The Phillies were expected to announce the hiring of the team's next president during the current homestand and it was rumored that Andy MacPhail was going to be their choice.
So it was no surprise that at a Monday afternoon press conference, Phillies principle owner John Middleton and current team president Pat Gillick introduced MacPhail as Gillick's replacement when he retires at the end of the 2015 season.
MacPhail, 62, will begin working immediately as a special assistant to Gillick, while learning about the organization and evaluating the baseball operations staff over the next three months.
