WASHINGTON - The first two starts of Stephen Strasburg's season each lasted only 51/3 innings. The Nationals righthander uncharacteristically surrendered a combined 19 hits and eight earned runs.

On Sunday afternoon, the final day of a woeful weeklong road trip, the Phillies came out swinging against Strasburg. By the time Carlos Ruiz notched the team's first hit, a single with two outs in the fifth inning of a 4-1 Phillies loss, the former first overall draft pick had exhausted only 42 pitches.
