NEW YORK — The Phillies wagered a $13.5 million risk on Clay Buchholz, and it appears the return will be limited to two starts and a 12.27 ERA.
Buchholz underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right arm. It will be months before he throws a baseball again. His season is most likely done.
It marks the second straight season a potential Phillies pitching flip became a flop. The team paid $9 million to acquire veteran Charlie Morton in a trade two Decembers ago; he popped a hamstring in his fourth start with the Phillies and missed the remainder of the 2016 season.
